That extraordinary feeling…
When you sit down in the swing, lean back, and give that first push as you pump your way to the highest point you think possible. That extraordinary feeling when you lunge forward at the very top to get a few inches higher and a few inches closer to flying in the sky.
I can almost feel the butterflies in my stomach right now as I envision grasping my hands tightly around that fat metal chain, seeing how high I am and how close I am to the birds, paralleling the highest branches of trees, and then by gravity’s grace soaring down with a relaxed throw of my head as my long hair almost touches the rocky sand full of crumpled, prickly leaves.
I fling myself forward and pump harder
and,
if I have the timing right,
I will get higher than before…
I know it.
I believe that in my classroom each desk will be a different “swing.” Maybe one student’s “swing” is to become an artist and another’s to become a state senator or a stay at home mom. Whatever the case, the “swing” represents the dream— the one thing that will make the student excited, scared, and giggly all at once. Here is where I will be constantly learning of how my content field, English, will play a role in each student’s “swing” so that I can encourage each one to participate in our learning community and continue to drive him or her towards that passion.
